to Diwali, Sunday 8 November

Scroll to light the lamps

Day 1 · DhanterasFri 6 Nov

Clean the house. Light the first lamp.

Dhanteras opens the festival with a wish for health and wealth. Homes are cleaned, the doorway is made ready, and one small lamp goes out by the door.

Tap the big lamp on the road.

Day 2 · Choti DiwaliSun 8 Nov

Dawn, and the dark gives way. Rangoli at the door.

The second day starts before sunrise: a bath, new clothes, the first lamps, and a rangoli at the door. Whichever story your family tells, the day is about light winning over the dark.

Day 3 · Lakshmi PujaSun 8 Nov

The night the whole street glows.

After sunset, families welcome Lakshmi into the home. Doors stay open, every lamp is lit, and the sky answers with fireworks. Then the evening moves indoors, to the puja and the people you love.

Day 4 · Govardhan PujaTue 10 Nov

A new year, a fresh start.

The morning after, the lamps are still burning and the sky turns gold. For many it is the first day of a new year, for others a day of thanks. Neighbours trade sweets, and everyone starts again.

Day 5 · Bhai DoojWed 11 Nov

Send a light to someone.

The festival ends with the bond between siblings, and a lamp is most itself when it is passed on. Write a name, pick the night or the room, and send.
